A closed preview stays out of today's task

A model without confirmed access belongs on my watch list, outside the execution I need to start now. On June 26, 2026, OpenAI announced a limited preview of the GPT-5.6 family, including Sol, Terra, and Luna. The release deserves attention. The word limited deserves as much attention as the new names themselves.

A week earlier, on June 19, I had asked for the best available model. That preference came up during a work conversation, where choosing an option needs to lead to an execution. The announcement made the question more concrete: available to whom? An excellent answer published by somebody else does not unlock access in my account.

Preview participants can offer useful observations. I want to read them while understanding the conditions that produced them. I still need to establish whether the candidate exists in the product where I will work. A recommendation that ignores this keeps the discussion lively and the task waiting. A button I cannot see remains unable to execute anything for me.

Even confirmed access requires examining the route to delivery. A model may be available through one interface and absent from my intended workflow. Preparing material differently takes time. Checking results in another environment takes time too. Those steps belong in the comparison because they are part of obtaining a useful answer.

A family with three names makes me curious about the division of roles. I want to understand the announced capabilities and prepare a suitable task to compare accessible candidates. Picking the name that sounds most powerful would be too easy. My preference for the best result requires finding out what each option resolves and how much review it leaves behind.

I do not need to rearrange the workflow with every announcement. I can follow an approaching capability while continuing to deliver with available options. Waiting for access is a concrete dependency; recording that wait helps revisit the choice later. Stopping work in front of it turns curiosity into delay without adding any information about the model.

For this preview, the next action is to establish which product provides access and what conditions make it obtainable. While that answer remains open, Sol, Terra, and Luna stay among the candidates I follow. Today's task proceeds with an accessible option I can evaluate. When access changes, I will revisit the choice using the same delivery criterion. An earlier decision does not become a defeat merely because the catalog grew.

Retrospective written in October 2026. The post date identifies the week revisited; the opinions draw on later experience.
